Picos de Europa
Just 40 kilometers from the coast are high-peaked mountains, perpetual snow, lakes and ravines, provided by the Picos de Europa . As you head inland towards the valleys, you come across extensive areas of forest and lush greenery. Asturias definitely lives up to its name, Costa Verde , having some outstanding natural preserves and some of Spain s best national parks, Covadonga and Somiedo .

There are many animals in this part of Spain including the legendary golden eagle, wild boar, brown bears and wolves. The rugged earth is dotted with small rural settlements - quaint houses and h (grain barns) nestled in the lush flora and fauna of the surroundings.
Asturias is also an area rich in orchids species. In fact, it is here where you can find bee orchids or man orchids growing along the side of old roads, or purple fields thriving with Serapias . There are also various Narcissus species found in the region, three of which have been declared of special interest by the European Economic Community . If you walk through the mountains during spring, you shall see fields of bright yellow due to the abundance of small Narcissus citrinus or Narcissus leonensis ; a cheerful, breathtaking sight to witness.
Golden Eagle
The region is just as famous for its lush forests. The peak forests are composed mainly of beech, giving way to mixed woodlands of Pyrenean oak, sweet chestnut, ash, birch, yew, holly, and lime found beneath. There are many valuable forests in the area; the beech forests of Valde and Sajambre are just a few to mention. These are magnificent Atlantic woods, and one of the best beech woods in the Iberian Peninsula . Situated on either side of the Senda del Arcediano is the Monte Cortegueros, a beech forest with the largest population of yews in the national park. The Pome , meanwhile is a mature beech forest that has recently been declared a restricted area. In the district of Ponga is the Bosque de Pelo , a specially protected beech forest that has a large representation of Capercaillies and hollies.
