Town history

The mountainous Cantabrian region of Asturias is located northwest of Spain , south of the Bay of Biscay and east of Galicia . It proudly preserves its ancient claim to the title designating it a principality. A stronghold of the Christian kingdom, Asturias was able to resist Roman invasion for a decade, and the Moors from the south were never able to conquer the region.

The small Christian kingdom began to spread throughout the Cantabrian and in 1388 Asturias became a Principality. The Asturians are known for their pride, stubborn courage and independence-traits seen in the warfare against Napoleon , in various uprisings against the Spanish government, in the civil war of 1936-39, and in the general strike of 1962. The region gained autonomous status and reverted to its historic title of Principality of Asturias in 1982.
